Maldon Archaeological and Historical Group (MAHG) exists to discover,  explore   and record the history and origins of the Maldon District and to present the findings in an understandable and entertaining way.

The Group is active in many areas, including;

• Excavation

• Geophysical surveys

• Historic research

• Publishing

• Exhibitions, and

• Archaeological talks

New Members are welcomed whatever their level of experience.

Club nights at the MAHG Headquarters take place on Wednesday nights:

• April to October - 7pm to 9 pm

• November to March - 7.30 pm to 9 pm

When you'll have the opportunity to; take part in post excavation work; undertake / assist in research; and, of course, meeting with other members and refreshments.

The Headquarters is open to members of the public who wish to access our large collection of local archives and books.

Public Talks:

The Group can offers illustrated talks for which no charge is made, on the following local subjects:

• A History of Maldon and Heybridge

• Industrial Maldon & Heybridge

• Beeleigh Mill

• The Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation (can be combined with Beeleigh Mill)

• The Beeleigh Abbey Excavation

• St. Roger of Beeleigh

Stephen Nunn has prepared a talk on the subject of 'St. Roger of Beeleigh' and will be pleased to deliver this to other local clubs and societies.

• The Cellars of Maldon

Talks can be tailored to last between 1/2 an hour and 1 1/2 hours.

We would like to acknowledge the much appreciated grant of £1,300 recently received from 'Awards for All' for a laptop and laptop projector which will greatly improve the quality and flexibility of our talks.

• A new book has just been published by MAHG; 'Below Ground at Beeleigh'. A fascinating account of these important excavations at Beeleigh Abbey - see Publications & Exhibitions page for further information.

• Another recent MAHG publication, written by Stephen Nunn, is 'Maldon, the Dengie & Battles in the Skies 1939 - 1945' , see Books & Exhibs page for further information.

• 31st July - 30th November: Little Baddow History Centre; 'Archaeology in Little Baddow'.

Recent Projects:

• Ulting Church: A geophysical survey was carried out along one side of the church in 2007, to establish the site of a demolished Guild chapel. The results were promising and  MAHG has put forward proposals for excavation at the site, which currently await the granting of a faculty.

• Beeleigh Abbey, Maldon: The Beeleigh Excavation is finally at an end after nearly 5 years. Many thanks to all those who worked on the site at various times, and to our two expert dig directors, Trevor Ennis of EFAU, and Howard Brooks of CAT.

  Excavation began in the autumn of 2001 with the kind permission of Mr & Mrs Foyle, and with financial support from the Countryside Agency and the Lottery Heritage Fund.

• Coggeshall Abbey: MAHG were invited to carry out a geophysical survey to locate the Abbey church.

• Chelmsford Area: A previously unknown Roman villa? A geophysical survey in the Chelmsford area by MAHG members provides some interesting results.

   

Technical Papers:

• Dating Clay Pipe Stems: For those of you who find fragments of clay pipes (of the smoking variety) in and around the Maldon District and have wondered how old they are you may be pleased to know that help is at hand through:

  • Technical papers relating to pipe making in the Maldon area available at the MAHG HQ (details will be added to the 'Books & Exhibs' page in the near future).

  • Or simply download the 'calculator tool & record sheet' via the link below - just enter the diameter of the stem hole in the appropriate column & the estimated date of manufacture will magically appear in the final column. The formula this uses was empirically developed by Nobby Clark, a former well respected dig Director with MAHG, over a number of years and is a tried, tested, and trusted piece of work.
