UPDATE:
09 & 20 JUNE 2008;
Hello
Team!
Yes
- we are back at Tollesbury - we have finally received clearance to
work on BOTH the Home Field AND the
South Field (our 'cemetery')! Graham, the farm manager, drew up
today (07 June 2008) to give us the news!
The
trailer has been relocated to the Home Field to make our life easier
and to keep it clear of Jenny's grass.
After
7 years at Carrington Farm and as a result of staffing
problems at the Duke of Edinburgh Unit, I have for the first time
found my loyalties split. Additionally I felt that DEFRA would drag
their heels for longer than they have. So, after consulting with our
honoured Chairman and those who attended today, I have decided to
take a short 'sabbatical' and hand over control to Brian Riley who
has graciously agreed to be director until the end of September
this year.
My
last involvement in that role will be on Saturday, 21st June.
I am extremely grateful to Brian and also to Derek and Ed who, in
particular, have helped me to my decision. Saturday morning 'Diggers
Weather Line' and any other Tollesbury related queries will
therefore now be answered by Brian (see
below).
May
I please thank every one of you for the support you have given to
me and may I please beg you to continue your commitment in
helping Brian to the same extent. I will 'pop' in if things allow,
but from 2 weeks time - Brian's the boss!
Before
I close I would very much like to congratulate Ed on achieving her
Degree in Archaeology - no mean feat for a retired banana throwing
dentist!! Ed has kindly offered her expertise to Brian for this
season - her supporting knowledge has been a real bonus for me.
Good
luck to you all and I'll see you in October.
Updates
will continue to be posted on this web site.
The
site is now open every Saturday (09:30 am until about 5:00
pm).
Diggers
Help Line: For
further information or to check if site will be open (before 09:00
on the day) contact Brian Riley on 01621 810497.
Latecomers
welcome!! Note, coffee break is at 11:00 am!
Please
see Mike's Open
Letter to ALL Diggers following his temporary departure from the
dig on the 20th June 2006. We all look forward to seeing him back on
site in October 2006 - if not before!

BEELEIGH
ABBEY:
The Beeleigh
Excavation is finally at an end after nearly 5 years. Many thanks to
those who worked on the site and to Trevor Ennis who has provided
expert advice. Excavation
began in the autumn of 2001 with the kind permission of Mr & Mrs
Foyle, and with financial support from the Countryside Agency and
the Lottery Heritage Fund.

ESSEX
PLACE NAMES PROJECT:
The Project,
which is a scheme of the Essex Society for Archaeology and History, has three aims:
-
To record
names of roads, streets, fields, farms, houses, woods, inns,
rivers, streams, mills, owners and tenants from old documents
and maps, dating from current Ordnance Surveys, through 19th
century tithe maps, estate maps, medieval, Anglo-Saxon and
(occasionally) Roman documents, parish by parish.
-
To
explore local areas in each parish where there are current or
earlier names which suggest their history, industrial or
agricultural use (milling, cloth making) or archaeological
remains (such as former buildings and burial mounds), to see if
any evidence still exists.
-
To make
available this information to any person or group who wish to
use it for further research into history, archaeology,
genealogy, linguistics, philology or related subjects.
If you would
like to take part in, or contribute to, the Project please write to
the Project Coordinator at the address below. Further information is
also available from the Project web site, hosted by Essex
University, which can be found at:
