NEW
BOOKS:
MAHG
has recently published four new books;
-
'A
History of Beeleigh Mill'. This is an updated version of the
original History of Beeleigh Mill book and has been written by
Grahame Thorne. It includes more engine details, a history section
by Stephen Nunn and additional information, including reports of the
fire that ultimately led to the mills destruction and an eight page
centre section containing coloured illustrations.
-
'Maldon
Heybridge and the Great War (1914 - 1918)'. MAHG have again teamed
up with local historian and author Stephen Nunn. This latest study pulls together, for the first time ever, a
complete roll call of the 248 Maldon and Heybridge men who made the
ultimate sacrifice (only 146 of them are listed on the town’s main
war memorial). It
will be of special interest to local historians, genealogists,
students of the First World War and all those curious about the
heritage of the Maldon and Heybridge District.
For
further information visit the 'Books & Exhibs' page of this web
site, or simply click on the book title above.
Both
books have virtually sold out. They would make an excellent present - get
your copies NOW to avoid disappointment.

BEELEIGH
ABBEY:
The Beeleigh
Excavation is finally at an end after nearly 5 years. Many thanks to
those who worked on the site and to Trevor Ennis who has provided
expert advice. Excavation
began in the autumn of 2001 with the kind permission of Mr & Mrs
Foyle, and with financial support from the Countryside Agency and
the Lottery Heritage Fund.

ESSEX
PLACE NAMES PROJECT:
The Essex
Place Names Project is currently looking for volunteer
Recorders.
The purpose of
the Project,
which is a scheme of the Essex Society for Archaeology and History
is to record, parish by parish, throughout the whole of Essex, the
names of local features. Its principal aims are to:
-
Record
names of roads, streets, fields, farms, houses, woods, inns,
rivers, streams, mills, together with the names of their owners and tenants.
This is achieved using old maps, tithe records, etc.
-
Explore local areas in each parish where there are current or
earlier names which suggest their history, industrial or
agricultural use (milling, cloth making) or archaeological
remains (such as former buildings and burial mounds), to see if
any evidence still exists.
-
Make
available this information to any person or group who wish to
use it for further research into history, archaeology,
genealogy, linguistics, philology or related subjects.
Recorders can
work singly or as groups and the work can be done at home, with some
visits to the Essex Records Office.
Compiling the
information can be done either on computer or by hand and can be
fascinating work for anyone with an interest in local history.
There are a
number of parishes around Maldon without Recorders at
present. These include:
-
Althorne
-
